Small press magazines are the perfect gift.

midnightmind, December 24, 2024December 24, 2024

We aren’t a huge fan of the “gift messaging” that goes on this time of year. You all know what you are doing, and probably need very little advise from us.

BUT! Let us take a quick moment to make a case for an independently published magazine. And we don’t just mean ours.

Subscriptions to independent magazines make great gifts for the readers in your life because it is a year-long gift!

And, subscriptions are the life blood of small magazines because that’s where they make their money. Most independent magazines are too small to attach advertisers so they can’t make money that way.

All these efforts are a product of passion or obsession with the content itself. By supporting a small magazine, you are giving a small publisher a boost and helping new and emerging writers get published.

Please do consider for a “last second” gift for the readers in your life.

Here are a few we suggest:

Someone who loves wine? Try Full Pour.

Love running or have a runner in your life? Try Like The Wind Magazine

Skiing and ski culture your thing? There are a bunch of good ones. One is Mountain Gazette.

Know someone who digs interior design? Try Apartamento Magazine (Issue 33 featured an interview with the amazing Lloyd Kahn!)

We have loved After Hours for years. Love reading beat-related work? Check it out.

Art magazines can be overwhelming but Juxtapoz is about the most accessible and – get this – fun! art magazine we’ve found!

We buy a few copies every year of Cherry Bombe for a special someone in our lives.

A magazine that has never disappointed is Believer Magazine. Great writing about – well – everything?

And a classic of the small magazine world for writing is STORY. Fiction-obsessed folks will love the writing!

Keeping up with what magazines are out there:

If this world of magazines you’ve never heard of seems overwhelming, try follow HI Desert Times or Quimby’s on Instagram. They are pretty good at giving you info on all the independent magazines you never knew existed but might enjoy!

The What Next?!! Project

In 1979, Robert Crumb created what must be one of the most insightful and interesting takes on America. His 12 panel comic, which was first published in CoEvolution Quarterly and later went through several versions of a poster, follows a single intersection from it’s natural state until the 1979 version…
