Below is our answer to this question from 2004:
We have tried several attempts to classify ourselves, but to our pleasure, this has been tough. And it keeps changing, so that makes anything we can even come close to saying about ourselves old hat by the time we get it on the site.
Know this though, we wake up every morning with fresh new ideas for the magazine. Sometimes, and here is where the name comes in, it keeps us up at night. We are running through things, trying to figure them out, trying not to take ourselves too serious, but at the same time work hard.
We are pleased with the response we have been getting to our small magazine. MIDNIGHT MIND NUMBER THREE sold out in six weeks. We thought this was great. That was, until MIDNIGHT MIND NUMBER FOUR sold out in 26 days. This was quite a shock.
We immediately quit our day jobs and all bought really fast cars. We could be seen walking the streets of trendy towns wearing avaitor glasses and the right amount of stubble on our faces. We all carried combs in our pockets.
That, is, or course, a lie. In truth, MIDNIGHT MIND MAGAZINE is put together while listening to Bruce Springsteen and we are often interrupted (happily) to go hang out with friends. We love beer. We love a black lab that we recently met who has a very big head and, we promise, is smarter than all of us combined. We don’t wear aviator sunglasses although we have all owned a pair at some point in our lives. And we would rather walk than drive. We have been known to tell the same story over and over.
But the magazine is really a reflection of the writers writing for it. Since they do this for no money, one has to assume they do it for the love of it. And we have been very lucky to have some great writers in our issues. We will take a moment to thank them here.
Thank you.
And we are a bit off (as they would say in London). We have been told that since we are gaining a larger audience, we now must buckle down and get serious. No more jokes where the ISBN information should be. No more refund policies that involve bird crap. But we say F’em. We started this our way, and we’ll finish it our way.
Oh, and thank you. For making it this far. For checking us out. For spreading the word, coming to reading, pointing out mistakes we made. For all of it we thank you.
WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING.
“The Safe Guide To Camping is the second volume in the sensational Midnight Mind series. With this installment, the acclaimed literary journal continues to build a name in the exclusive small press circle heretofor dominated by Granta, Story, and the Paris Review.” – THE MUSE.COM
“The staff of Midnight Mind Magazine must have a great time at work. At least that’s the impression you get from reading their latest issue. Yes, it’s filled with fiction, essays, poetry and reviews just like all those other “little” magazines. But what makes Midnight Mind such a standout is the exuberance with which it’s all executed.” read the entire review at newpages.com
