a cultural review magazine

A message 20 years in the making.

midnightmind, October 13, 2023March 2, 2026

We started this back in, maybe, can’t quite remember an actual start date. 1999? 1998 maybe. It didn’t start as a magazine. It started as a hub for creativity that morphed, eventually, into a printed magazine. Until it grew a life of its own. Thousands of writing submissions, hundreds of emails a day (oh, the spam before spam filters!).

And then it was all too much. 2003. Or 2004? Our last post was “tearing it off the walls” and we called it quits. More like cried “uncle”! More like ran away, stopped the music, got off the train.

And then? And then? Well, pre-social media. Pre-doomscrolling. We took a vacation from it all. Moved west. Took up bar shuffleboard as a pastime. Explored. Camped. Got married. Slept the sleep of someone without a long to do list.

And then?

And then kids. A dog. A winery. A flower farm.

But something was always there. And things had changed. Part of me couldn’t fathom turning the spigot back on. And part of me couldn’t imagine not doing it.

So here we are. 20 years seemed long enough to wait.
